Theft spree in Uttarpara with over 50 cases reported in 2 years, locals allege lack of night policing

A series of thefts has triggered fear and unrest in the Uttarpara police station area under the Chandannagar Police Commissionerate. Local residents claim that more than 50 thefts have taken place in the area over the last two to three years, with burglars repeatedly targeting empty houses.

The latest incident was reported from Ward No. 7 under the Uttarpara Municipality, where thieves allegedly broke into the house of Vishwajit Sarkar while it was unoccupied. According to the family, the burglars entered through the back door, broke open cupboards, ransacked the house, and fled with a large amount of cash and valuables.

Residents have alleged that the absence of visible night patrols has emboldened thief gangs, allowing crimes to continue unchecked. Although the police have earlier arrested several accused and recovered stolen property in some cases, locals say the thefts never completely stopped and have increased again with the onset of winter. In the past month alone, multiple incidents have been reported from different parts of the police station area.

Concerned residents, especially the elderly, have suggested reviving community-based night patrols with the support of local clubs through a coordination committee. Police, meanwhile, have advised residents not to leave homes vacant for extended periods and to inform the police station in advance if they plan to stay away, assuring closer monitoring. As thefts continue, public attention is now focused on the next steps by the police and local administration.
