In the early hours of June 26, 2023, a stolen bus from Baguiati bus stand created havoc on the streets of Kolkata.
The bus, identified as route 44 (WB O4E/2157), initially evaded police and bus owners by driving recklessly. Efforts by on-duty police and traffic personnel to stop the bus proved futile.
Around 3:00 AM, the stolen bus collided with a small vehicle (WB 02AR/3424) at the Clock Tower signal, resulting in serious injuries to four occupants of the vehicle. Undeterred, the bus continued at high speed towards Ultadanga and crashed into a stone chip-laden truck (WB 51C/4647) at Dakshindari before finally coming to a stop.
The injured individuals, including the driver of the bus and four occupants of the car, were immediately rushed to RG Kar Hospital for treatment. Tragically, three occupants of the car namely Kamala devi rathi, Shivshankar Rathi, shrivats Rathi, residents of Maniktala, succumbed to their injuries. However, both drivers are currently in stable condition.
Investigations revealed that the offending driver was a former employee of the route 44 bus who had been dismissed a year ago due to alcohol-related issues. He had stolen the bus with the intention of selling its fuel for monetary gain.
Authorities are taking all necessary legal measures to address the incident, with Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Paresh Roy serving as the investigating officer of the case.
