Tensions in West Bengal have escalated following the declaration of election results, with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) accusing the victorious Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of initiating "bulldozer action." On Tuesday night, the TMC shared footage on social media allegedly showing a mob of BJP supporters using a bulldozer to mow down shops and vandalize a TMC party office near Kolkata's iconic New Market area. The video depicts a crowd cheering and playing music as the machinery destroys structures, marking a volatile shift in the state's political climate.
The outgoing TMC leadership took a sharp jibe at the BJP's "Poriborton" (change) slogan, claiming that the promised change has arrived in the form of "brazen hooliganism and gundagardi." The party alleged that the rampage was not a spontaneous outburst but a coordinated celebration of terror. TMC leaders further claimed that the BJP’s national leadership has essentially handed their workers a "licence to let loose on the streets," targeting anyone who stands in their path while central forces reportedly look on without intervening.
Issuing a stern warning, the TMC stated that while shops are the current targets, the violence will eventually extend to political opponents, statues of Bengal’s icons, and the homes of the vulnerable. The party emphasized that it would not back down, promising to build a "wall of resistance" against what it termed "state-sponsored terror." This escalating war of words highlights a deeply fractured state as the BJP prepares to take the reins of power following its landslide victory.
