A political controversy has erupted in Durgapur after BJP workers launched a door-to-door campaign targeting women on the occasion of Poila Baishakh. Members of the BJP Mahila Morcha were seen distributing and filling out forms carrying details such as names, addresses, and phone numbers, promising a proposed ₹3,000 financial assistance scheme.
The forms, reportedly titled “Matrashakti Bhorsha Card,” featured imagery of Narendra Modi and outlined a promise of financial support to women if the party comes to power. The outreach drive, accompanied by local rituals and campaign activities, quickly drew attention as it coincided with the enforcement of the model code of conduct ahead of elections. The Trinamool Congress has strongly objected to the initiative, alleging that the move is an attempt to influence voters in violation of election rules. Local leaders have warned of approaching the Election Commission, claiming that such campaigns amount to inducement during the poll period.
In response, BJP leaders defended the campaign, stating that it aligns with their manifesto promises and does not breach any regulations. The development has intensified the political contest in the region, with both sides sharpening their narratives around welfare schemes and voter outreach in the run-up to the elections.
