The political standoff between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Election Commission of India (ECI) has reached the Calcutta High Court. Senior advocate and TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee has filed a petition challenging the recent large-scale reshuffle of more than 50 senior IAS and IPS officers in West Bengal.
The legal challenge specifically names Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar as a party, alleging that the removals were "arbitrary, unilateral, and lacked cogent reasoning." This move follows Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s scathing "undeclared emergency" remark regarding the ECI’s actions.
The petition argues that the summary removal of top-tier officials—including the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, and Director General of Police—shortly after the election announcement, constitutes "political interference of the highest order." Kalyan Banerjee, representing the ruling party, contends that historically the Commission consulted state governments before such sweeping changes.
