Trinamool Congress (TMC) Councillor Somas Chakraborty from Bidhannagar has been on the run for 11 days following his alleged involvement in an assault case in Baguiati. The case stems from a confrontation where a local promoter was attacked after failing to pay extortion money. According to the FIR, 20 individuals are named in connection with the assault, with charges including extortion, attempted murder, and assault. As of now, only two individuals have been arrested, while Chakraborty remains at large.
The police have conducted extensive searches in various locations, including Silapota in North Bengal and Digha, in an attempt to locate the councillor. Despite these efforts, Chakraborty has not been found, leading to growing concerns over the investigation’s progress. Authorities have not disclosed any information about the exact locations of their searches or the details of the ongoing investigation. Law enforcement is facing increasing pressure to apprehend the accused as the investigation continues.
The victim, a promoter who was severely beaten during the attack, has expressed his fear for his safety. He claims that, in the aftermath of the assault, a former police officer advised him to meet with Chakraborty and settle the matter privately, suggesting that no formal action would be taken. This has raised concerns about possible political interference in the case. The promoter continues to recover from his injuries and is calling for justice, fearing further retaliation.
Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation Chairman Sabyasachi Dutta has made statements regarding the case, saying, “If you stain a lion’s mouth with blood, it will bite you,” which appears to reflect his view on the escalation of the situation. However, he did not provide specific details about the course of action taken by local authorities to address the case. The comments have raised further questions about the handling of the incident and the investigation.
The case has drawn attention to the issue of political influence in local law enforcement and the challenges in investigating cases involving powerful political figures. As the search for Chakraborty continues, the victim remains hopeful for intervention from higher authorities to ensure justice is served.
