Hours before Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s scheduled visit to Berhampore in Murshidabad, a violent clash broke out between two factions of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), leaving the region on edge. The incident, which occurred late last night in the Madhupur area, involved several rounds of aerial firing and physical attacks, triggering panic among residents.
According to local accounts, a local TMC leader arrived at a club premises and suddenly fired six to seven rounds into the air. Soon after, members of a rival faction retaliated, leading to an exchange of gunfire. The situation escalated rapidly, and in the ensuing chaos, members from both groups reportedly struck each other on the head with sticks and other weapons.
The violence has shocked the residents of the area, who are now living in fear amid growing political hostilities. Many have questioned whether the violence was an attempt to prove supremacy ahead of the Chief Minister’s high-profile visit or merely a result of unchecked lawlessness within the party ranks.
Adding to the gravity of the incident, locals allege that the former Youth TMC president and his associates were also assaulted during the conflict. These allegations have further deepened the rift within the party at the local level.
Police arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and have launched an investigation. Multiple injuries were reported, although the exact number remains unconfirmed. Law enforcement officials are examining CCTV footage and questioning locals to determine the sequence of events and identify those responsible.
The incident has once again raised serious concerns about the growing stockpiling of illegal arms and explosives by political groups in West Bengal. With tensions already high, residents now fear that more such violent confrontations could erupt in the days ahead.
