Bidhannagar Mayor Krishna Chakraborty resigns, another massive blow to TMC
The Trinamool Congress is set to formally begin its “New Language Movement” in Kolkata from August 2, following Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s announcement during her 21st July rally. On Saturday night, the party finalized the outline of this long-term protest campaign.
According to the plan, the dharna will take place in front of the Gandhi statue on Mayo Road. It will run for nearly five months and will be spearheaded by various fronts and affiliated organizations of the party. The initiative is being framed as a cultural and constitutional resistance campaign, though the detailed agenda has not yet been made public.
Party insiders suggest that the movement is intended to highlight issues related to language identity and cultural rights, amid increasing political tensions between the Centre and state over federal autonomy. The TMC has projected this campaign as symbolic of its broader battle for Bengal’s rights and distinctiveness.
The party aims to keep the momentum going until the end of the year with regular programmes, sit-ins, and speeches by senior leaders and cultural figures.
