Humayun Kabir, Trinamool Congress MLA from Bharatpur in Murshidabad, has once again drawn attention after a video surfaced in which he appears to threaten the police. The video, dated Sunday, shows Kabir stating that if he were in the opposition, he would have responded to the police’s actions within 24 hours. He added that being part of the ruling party now restricts his ability to act freely.
Kabir accused police personnel in the areas of Lalbagh, Bararajya, Samserganj, and Bharatpur police stations of causing difficulties to ordinary citizens. He said, “If I were in the opposition, it wouldn’t take 24 hours to correct the police’s conduct. But now, as a government member, my hands and feet are tied.”
The opposition has reacted strongly to Kabir’s statement, alleging that a sitting MLA is threatening the police under the influence of power. Several political leaders questioned the implications of such comments on law and order, asking what message this sends about the state of policing.
This development comes shortly after controversy involving another Trinamool Congress leader, Anubrata Mondal, the former Birbhum district president. Mondal faced allegations for abusive language directed at the police, including an audio clip with derogatory remarks about an inspector-in-charge of the Bolpur police station. Mondal issued an apology within 38 minutes but reportedly avoided police questioning for two days, with his lawyer citing illness.
As of now, there has been no official response from the Trinamool Congress regarding Humayun Kabir’s remarks. Political observers note ongoing discussions about whether the party leadership will take disciplinary measures similar to those taken in the Mondal case. The situation remains under close watch by various stakeholders.
