In today’s assembly session, MLA Sayantika Banerjee addressed growing concerns over anti-social activities on the abandoned land of the Bengal Immunity Company in Baranagar. The company, which was nationalized by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, used to manufacture vaccines for various complex diseases. However, it ceased operations in 1993, and the land, which includes two large plots, has been left abandoned ever since. The first plot is located along BT Road, covering 80 bighas, while the second plot, spanning around 21 bighas, is situated at the eastern end of BT Road in Novapara.
Since the company’s closure, the two land parcels have turned into dense, overgrown areas. Local residents have raised alarms about the rise of anti-social activities taking place within the company's deteriorating premises, particularly during the night. Reports indicate that stolen equipment from the company has contributed to the worsening situation. The area, once home to industrial facilities, has now become a hotspot for illegal activities, with locals expressing fears about their safety.
The abandoned land has also become a breeding ground for various pests, including dengue mosquitoes, venomous insects, and snakes. The situation has left residents anxious about public health risks, with many seeking immediate intervention from authorities. In response to these concerns, MLA Sayantika Banerjee expressed support for the local community's request to either transform the land for public use or allow the state government to take responsibility for its upkeep.
