A Trinamool Congress office belonging to Sheikh Golam Mortuza, a member of the Potna-Pursha Gram Panchayat in East Burdwan, was allegedly set on fire late Sunday night. Firefighters were called to the scene and brought the blaze under control. No injuries were reported. Mortuza has accused supporters of Zakir Hossain, vice-president of the East Burdwan district Trinamool Congress and former Galsi-1 block president, of involvement in the incident.
Mortuza believes the attack was linked to a recent dispute involving the illegal felling of trees on panchayat land by one of Hossain’s supporters. He claims that after the panchayat lodged a formal complaint with the Forest Department, tensions escalated. Mortuza sees the fire as an act of retaliation and asserts that the office was actively used for party meetings and administrative purposes.
Zakir Hossain, however, has denied any connection to the incident and dismissed the accusations against his supporters. He also rejected Mortuza’s claim that the site was a party office, suggesting instead that local residents might be responsible for the fire. Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the incident.
