TMC releases first list of 17 candidates for Assam Assembly polls

The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) on Saturday released its first list of 17 candidates for the Assam Assembly elections scheduled for April 9, marking a major step in the party’s expansion strategy across the Northeast. The candidates were finalised under the guidance of party chairperson and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The list covers a wide geographic spread across Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Bajali, Kamrup, Upper Assam and the Barak Valley. Prominent names include Udangsri Narzary from Baokhungri, Mominur Islam from Bilasipara, Arif Akhtar Ahmed from Jaleswar, Kalyani Kalita from Bajali and Amirul Islam from Barkhetri. The party has also fielded Jiten Nag in Digboi, Dilip Moran in Makum, Tapas Das in Udharbond, and Shahajahan Laskar in Sonai.

In its announcement dated March 20, TMC extended wishes to all candidates, expressing confidence that the slate represents the party’s vision for stronger regional engagement. The declaration follows the submission of 18 star campaigners to the Election Commission, led by Mamata Banerjee and including Abhishek Banerjee, Mahua Moitra, Sushmita Dev and Shatrughan Sinha.

Meanwhile, the opposition landscape is taking shape with Congress announcing 94 candidates and partnering with Raijor Dal and other regional outfits. The BJP-led NDA bloc will contest 89 seats through BJP, 26 via AGP and 11 through BPF in the 126-seat Assembly. Counting is scheduled for May 4.
