Internal divisions within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) party have become more apparent following a series of statements and developments that highlight the growing tension between factions loyal to Mamata Banerjee and those rallying around her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee. The latest controversy erupted after Humayun Kabir, the MLA from Bharatpur, made a public statement expressing his support for Abhishek, suggesting that the state could benefit from a full-time police minister. Kabir's comment, “If there is a full-time police minister, I think no crime will happen under his watch,” implied that the current leadership under Mamata, who holds the Home Ministry, might be lacking in ensuring adequate law enforcement oversight. The remark raised concerns about the direction of the party’s leadership and cast a spotlight on Mamata's role in the governance of law and order in the state.
In response to Kabir’s comments, Firhad Hakim publicly reaffirmed his trust in Mamata Banerjee’s leadership. He emphasized that Mamata continues to be the central figure in the party and has successfully led it through several electoral victories. Hakim stated that no one had won an election in the party without Mamata's image, underscoring her continued importance as both the leader of the party and the state government. He also made it clear that Mamata Banerjee is still capable of managing all party departments and governmental functions, rejecting suggestions of her diminishing influence.
Hakim also addressed the growing speculation about Abhishek Banerjee’s increasing role within the party. While acknowledging that Abhishek is an important figure in the party’s future, Hakim stressed that Mamata’s leadership remained critical for the time being. “Abhishek is our child. When the time comes, we will discuss him. But right now, no one is stronger than Mamata Banerjee,” Hakim stated, reinforcing the notion that the TMC still sees Mamata as the undisputed leader. This statement further illustrated the generational divide within the party, with some leaders backing Mamata’s continued dominance and others favoring the rise of younger leaders like Abhishek.
Abhishek Banerjee’s growing prominence within TMC has led to increased speculation about a potential leadership transition. He has been taking a more active role in the party’s affairs, particularly in addressing organizational matters and representing the party in various forums. His influence among younger TMC members is undeniable, and his leadership style contrasts with that of Mamata, who has led the party for over two decades. However, despite Abhishek’s increasing visibility, Mamata Banerjee remains the central figure in TMC, with most of the party's senior leadership still aligning themselves with her.
