Muzaffarpur hospital blaze kills 3 patients, leaves 20 injured
Police in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district have arrested a Trinamool Congress worker in connection with the suicide of a Booth Level Officer (BLO), with investigators stating that the case is linked to a Rs. 20 lakh loan dispute rather than official work-related pressure.
The arrested accused has been identified as Bullet Khan, a resident of the Raninagar police station area. The deceased BLO was Hamimul Islam. Khan was produced before the Lalbagh sub-divisional court and has been remanded to five days of police custody.
According to police, Hamimul Islam’s body was recovered on Saturday night from a school in Alipur village under Bhagwangola Block-2. The investigation revealed that Khan had borrowed Rs. 20 lakh from the BLO and allegedly refused to repay the amount despite repeated demands.
Police further claimed that the accused threatened the BLO when repayment was sought, pushing him into severe mental stress that allegedly led to the suicide. Based on a complaint lodged by the deceased’s family, a case of abetment to suicide has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
The arrest came after initial political claims suggested the death was linked to pressure arising from the Special Intensive Revision of the voter list. Police findings later pointed to a personal financial dispute. The incident has triggered political reactions and concerns raised by BLO representatives seeking protection for field-level election officials.
