Angry mob vandalises TMC leader's house, sets fire over corruption allegations
A Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker was critically injured after being shot near a police station in Gangarampur of South Dinajpur, triggering political tension ahead of the Assembly elections. The accused, identified as a local ruling party leader, is currently absconding.
According to the victim’s family, the incident occurred late Tuesday night when Shiba Chowdhury was returning home. His car was allegedly intercepted near the Gangarampur Police Station by Babu Chowdhury and his associates, who then opened fire. Chowdhury sustained a bullet injury to his abdomen and was rescued by locals, who rushed him to Gangarampur Sub-Divisional Super Specialty Hospital, where his condition remains critical.
The accused, Babu Chowdhury, is reportedly associated with the town unit of the TMC and has been missing since the incident. Several others have also been named in connection with the firing and are currently absconding. While police sources suggested the incident may have stemmed from a dispute during a drinking session, the victim’s family has rejected this version, alleging it was a planned attack.
The incident has sparked political reactions, with the opposition alleging internal factional clashes within the ruling party. Meanwhile, the police have begun an investigation, though no formal complaint had been lodged at the time of reporting. Authorities have not issued any official statement, and efforts are underway to trace the accused.
