A major accident was narrowly averted at a petrol pump in Raipur after a man threw a burning lighter into a motorcycle fuel tank when asked not to smoke. The incident took place around 7:40 pm on February 18 at a filling station near Karma Chowk in the Urla area.
According to police, two youths had arrived to refuel their motorcycle when the pillion rider attempted to light a cigarette. A staff member warned him against smoking near fuel, following which he became angry and tossed the lighter into the tank, instantly triggering flames around the vehicle and fuel nozzle.
Pump workers reacted quickly by pulling away the fuel hose, shutting the main supply and using a fire extinguisher to douse the blaze. Some burning fuel splashed onto the accused, who tried to flee but were restrained by employees and handed over to police.
Based on CCTV footage, the accused were identified as Dharmendra Singh of Birgaon and Imran Quraishi of AHP Colony. Police seized the motorcycle and lighter and registered a case under sections related to arson and endangering public safety. Investigation is ongoing.
