Protests broke out at interstate borders of Himachal Pradesh ahead of a toll tax hike set to come into effect from April 1, leading to major traffic disruptions. Demonstrators from neighbouring Haryana gathered at the Barotiwala entry point in Solan district, blocking movement and triggering long queues of vehicles.
The agitation, which began in the morning, caused a traffic jam lasting nearly two and a half hours. Police from both states intervened to bring the situation under control, temporarily allowing vehicles to pass without paying toll charges. Protesters, including local leaders and panchayat members, submitted demands seeking exemption from toll within a 5-kilometre radius of the border.
The protests were triggered by the state government’s decision to increase toll charges for vehicles entering from other states. The revised rates include a significant hike for cars, light commercial vehicles and heavy machinery, raising concerns among frequent commuters and border residents.
Protesting groups have warned of intensified agitation, including plans to block multiple entry points between Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, potentially disrupting key routes and impacting inter-state connectivity.
