Tea workers in North Bengal have called a 12-hour strike demanding bonuses during Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's visit. The bandh has left tourists stranded on the roads to the mountains, causing significant disruptions just before the festive season.
Protesters have blocked key routes like Rohini, halting traffic up and down the hills. Sporadic unrest has been reported in Kurseong, where bandh supporters clashed with police. Despite concerns for tourists, the strike continues, as eight trade unions protest on the streets.
The striking leader pointed out that while workers in the Terai-Duars region have received a 20% bonus, mountain tea workers are still waiting for a decision.
Tourists have expressed their frustration, with one stating that they have no way to return to Siliguri from the mountains. The strike comes during the Chief Minister's visit to assess flood conditions in North Bengal and has added political significance.
