Two people died, and two others were injured after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning a septic tank in Nandigram Block 1’s Vekutia village. The incident occurred when local mechanic Mrityunjay Jana was called by Kanai Jana to clean the septic tank at his residence. As Mrityunjay entered the tank, he collapsed due to the poisonous fumes.
Hearing his cries, three of his family members rushed to rescue him but also inhaled the gas and lost consciousness. All four were taken to Nandigram Super Specialty Hospital for treatment. Despite medical efforts, Mrityunjay Jana and his relative Manas Giri succumbed to the toxic exposure. Kanai Jana remains hospitalized, receiving treatment, while a woman from the family, who also fell ill, was discharged after primary care.
The cause of the gas buildup inside the septic tank has not been officially determined. Local authorities have been informed about the incident. No official statements have been released regarding any further investigation or safety measures.
