Taaza TV has reported serious safety violations at New Town’s Axis Mall, highlighting the use of kitchen gas cylinders inside stalls built in the mall’s common passage. These stalls, constructed with fiber and plywood materials that are flammable, pose a significant fire risk. The report notes that the common passage, meant for public movement, has been encroached upon by these stalls, which include several major brand outlets. This has resulted in restricted movement and increased hazards for visitors.
The ground floor of the mall, especially the entry point, is overcrowded with stalls, and the use of gas cylinders for cooking inside these confined spaces raises safety concerns. Additionally, a toy train runs through these congested areas, increasing the risk to shoppers, including children. Air conditioning units have also been installed in these stalls, further intensifying the fire hazard.
On the upper floors, specifically the fifth and sixth floors, Taaza TV’s report observed structural damage including leaks in the ceiling, cracks in walls, and deteriorating beams linked to the operation of the Snow Park. These signs indicate possible neglect of maintenance and structural safety.
Following the report, Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim acknowledged the issue and assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted. He thanked Taaza TV for bringing the matter to public attention and said, “We will investigate this irregularity, and our team will take necessary action.”
Taaza TV’s investigation also found similar safety and regulatory violations in other malls across Kolkata and Howrah, suggesting a wider pattern of oversight issues. The report emphasizes the need for strict enforcement of safety regulations in malls to protect public safety and prevent incidents like the recent fire at Rituraj Hotel, where 15 people died.
