A fatal accident occurred in Kolkata’s BBD Bagh area when a passenger bus lost control and ran over four pedestrians on the sidewalk. The incident took place at the junction of Mahatma Gandhi Road and College Street during the busy morning hours. The bus, which was traveling with passengers from Howrah to Sealdah, reportedly suffered brake failure, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle swerved onto the sidewalk where four women were walking, and the bus ran over them. The victims were immediately rushed to the hospital, where one woman was declared dead, and the others were treated for their injuries.
According to police sources, the bus involved in the incident was newly acquired, and investigators are working to determine the cause of the brake failure. Authorities are looking into whether the bus had any mechanical issues before the incident, or if it was operating despite possible faults. Police are also investigating the maintenance and inspection records of the vehicle to ascertain whether the bus should have been on the road at the time. The driver has been questioned, but no formal statement has been released yet regarding the exact cause of the failure.
In a separate incident, a minibus on MG Road also lost its brakes and crashed into a guardrail. Three individuals, including a child, were injured in the accident and taken to Medical College Hospital. One of the injured is reported to be in critical condition. The driver of the minibus has been arrested by the police, and authorities are investigating whether the vehicle had any mechanical issues prior to the accident. Both incidents are under investigation as police examine the vehicles and conditions leading to the brake failures.
