A tragic incident unfolded at the Ganga Ghat in Uttarpara's BB Street, as five individuals lost their lives while bathing in the river. The incident, marked by strong currents, has raised concerns about the possibility of more people going missing. Shockingly, among those swept away in the powerful current were women and children. Chandannagar Police Commissionerate officials and personnel from the Uttarpara police station have been deployed at the site to manage the situation.
Eyewitnesses described a scene of numerous individuals gathering at the Ganga Ghat for tarpan, a sacred ritual.
However, as the tide swiftly advanced, confusion reigned, leading to several people being carried away by the powerful currents before they could react. Locals who had gathered at the Ganga Ghat alleged the absence of police arrangements at the site during the rising tide, which might have prevented the tragedy. Divers have been mobilized to search for the missing individuals in the river.
