The state of Uttar Pradesh faced widespread disruption on the first day of the New Year as a nationwide strike by drivers unfolded in protest against the recently increased jail term of 7-10 years for hit-and-run cases. Over 2.5 lakh trucks, 3,000 buses, and drivers of auto-rickshaws and taxis participated in the strike, leaving citizens stranded in various cities.
Normal life came to a standstill, with the supply of essential goods also being impacted. The Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) reported a significant reduction in bus operations due to the strike, affecting nearly half of the daily fleet. Reports of fights at toll plazas and blocked bus movements added to the chaos.
