Trash clearance begins on GT Road in Hooghly after month-long civic apathy

Garbage piled up along GT Road in the Harijanpally area of Ward No. 8 under Bhadreswar Municipality in Hooghly district finally began to be cleared on Monday, bringing relief to hundreds of residents who had been affected for nearly a month.

The waste had accumulated after garbage removed from a roadside drain was dumped beside it, leaving the area choked with filth. The situation caused severe inconvenience to locals, with children struggling to access a nearby school and the entrance gate of a local temple forced to remain shut due to the stench and obstruction.

The issue drew wider attention after a political leader visited the spot on Monday and highlighted the problem through a live social media broadcast. Soon after, sanitation work began at the site, starting with the garbage lying in front of the temple.

Local councillor Abhijit Guha said manpower constraints had delayed the cleanup, but a sanitation worker was finally arranged. He added that waste accumulated in the drain over several years is also being removed and the entire clearance process may take eight to ten days to complete.
