A storm with heavy rain and strong winds caused widespread damage across Kolkata on Thursday evening, resulting in two fatalities and significant disruption to train services. In the Behala area, a large tree fell on 50-year-old Meena Ghosh, severely injuring her. She was rushed to a local hospital but was declared dead upon arrival. Another person was also injured in the incident and admitted to the hospital.
In Barasat's Indira Colony, 30-year-old Govinda Bairagi was killed when a tree fell on his house while he was sleeping. Neighbors attempted to remove the tree and take him to the hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival. This incident was part of a larger series of storm-related damages across the city. In Sealdah, a tree fell on a car, damaging it severely, though no injuries were reported.
The storm also caused significant disruption to train services, particularly in the Sealdah branch. A tree fell on the tracks near Naihati, halting an up Naihati local train for over an hour while repair work was conducted. Additionally, a tree fell on the overhead wires between Madhyamgram and Birati, affecting train operations in the area. While the situation began to normalize later in the evening, authorities worked to clear the debris and restore services.
