Tremors rock Kolkata as 5.6-magnitude earthquake strikes Bhutan
Tremors were felt across Kolkata and several districts of North Bengal late on Sunday night after a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck Bhutan. According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres. The tremors were reported shortly after 11:00 PM, causing residents in multiple areas to experience noticeable shaking.
In Kolkata, many residents reported feeling the ground shake for several moments. Tremors were also felt in Siliguri, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar. The sudden movement prompted people in several localities to come out of their homes as a precaution after experiencing the shaking.
The tremors were felt while several districts of North Bengal were experiencing heavy rainfall. The earthquake occurred about a month after a previous seismic event had also been felt in parts of the state. Residents reported a renewed sense of concern as the latest tremors spread across Kolkata and North Bengal following the earthquake in Bhutan.
