Milan Bhowmik, a local Trinamool Congress panchayat member, has been arrested in connection with the murder of BJP leader Vijay Krishna Bhuiyan in Moyna, East Medinipur.
The arrest came after the Calcutta High Court ordered a re-postmortem of the dead body and gave strict instructions in the murder case. The victim's wife, Lakshmi, had filed a complaint against 34 people, including Bhowmik, at Moyna police station.
Vijay Krishna was allegedly beaten in front of his wife before being taken away from his house and shot. The attackers then threw his dead body near the house. Lakshmi claims that all those involved in the murder are related to the Trinamool Congress, and her husband was targeted because of his affiliation with the BJP.
The incident has sparked tension in the area, with the BJP calling for a 12-hour bandh in protest, which led to clashes between police and BJP workers. The Leader of Opposition, Shubhendu Adhikari, has also called for a rally in the area.
The victim's family has alleged that when they went to the police station for help, the police reprimanded them and chased them away. The incident has raised concerns about political violence in the region and the safety of political leaders and their families.
