Trinamool Congress MLA Tapas Saha, who represented the Tehatta Assembly constituency in Nadia district, passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 66. He had suffered a brain stroke on May 13 due to a cerebral hemorrhage. Following the incident, he was admitted to a private hospital near EM Bypass in Kolkata, where he breathed his last. He had served as an MLA from two different constituencies in Nadia and had been associated with the party since its early years.
According to family sources, Tapas Saha was found unconscious in his room on May 13 after failing to respond in the morning. Family members entered his room and discovered him lying unresponsive on the bed. He was first taken to the ICU of Tehatta Sub-Divisional Hospital, but as his condition worsened, he was shifted to a hospital in Kolkata. He remained under treatment until his death on Thursday morning.
Trinamool Congress MLA from Chapra, Rukbanur Rahman, stated that several leaders and party workers from Nadia district were travelling to Kolkata. He said the details regarding Tapas Saha’s funeral would be decided after discussions with the party and Saha’s family. The funeral date, time, and arrangements had not been finalized as of Thursday afternoon.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed condolences over the death of Tapas Saha, stating, “I am deeply saddened by the untimely demise of Shri Tapas Saha, MLA of Tehatta in Nadia and a key member of our Trinamool Congress family. He was a long-time colleague of mine. His passing is an irreparable loss to both the district and to Bengal’s politics. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, relatives, friends, and countless supporters.”
Tapas Saha had earlier served as the MLA from Palashipara from 2016 to 2021 before contesting and winning from Tehatta in 2021. His name had appeared in connection with the teacher recruitment corruption case. The Central Bureau of Investigation had raided his residence, collected his voice samples, and seized documents. His personal aide, Prabir Koyal, also came under investigation. With his death and the earlier passing of Kaliganj MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed on February 2, two Assembly bypolls are now due in Nadia district.
