An extraordinary and unique form of political protest unfolded in Durgapur on Saturday night, drawing significant attention away from the traditional, violent confrontations that often characterize West Bengal's political landscape. Amid rising public anger regarding wide-scale corruption allegations, where citizens in various areas have taken to throwing raw eggs at arrested Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders and former MLAs, local BJP workers and common citizens opted for an innovative strategy dubbed "Gandhigiri." Instead of physically assaulting or humiliating a cornered TMC representative, protestors decided to treat him like a respected guest by serving him a freshly prepared egg omelette.
The backdrop to this unique agitation stems from a serious land-scam allegation originating within Ward 41 of the Durgapur Municipal Corporation. Local residents of Mahananda Colony and Birbhanpur accused the outgoing TMC Councillor, Shipul Saha, and his loyal faction of extorting hundreds of thousands of rupees from poor families. The political operators allegedly collected these large bribes under the false pretext of officially processing and distributing government land deeds, locally referred to as "pattas." Tensions reached a boiling point on Saturday night when a hidden bag packed with filled-out patta application forms was suddenly discovered and seized from a residence inside Mahananda Colony, with video clips of the recovery quickly going viral across social media channels.
As news of the discovery spread, a massive crowd of furious residents carrying the recovered forms and brooms gathered to demand an immediate financial refund of their extorted money. While the primary accused, Councillor Shipul Saha, could not be reached and went unavailable for comment, local protestors managed to summon his close associate and local TMC leader, Sukumar Chakraborty, to the spot to account for the missing funds. Instead of facing a hostile mob or a barrage of raw eggs, Chakraborty was requested to sit comfortably on a chair. Local BJP leader Deepak Das and his supporters then served him an omelette while demanding to know exactly how much money had been extorted and where the funds were currently stashed.
