In the lead-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the alliance formed against the BJP government at the Center, WB's ruling TMC has advised the Congress, the largest party in the INDIA alliance, to swiftly make seat-sharing decisions in states where it is feasible. Mamata Banerjee had earlier emphasized that regional parties should prioritize their respective states based on their strength.
Following this, theTMC had proposed allocating two out of the 42 seats in WB to the Congress. An anonymous senior party leader stated that they seek a prompt decision in states where seat sharing is straightforward before the next alliance meeting, enabling efficient publicity and mobilization against the BJP.
Similar proposals have also been put forth by JDU, RJD, and AAP. The TMC stressed the importance of deciding on at least 300 seats within 15 days to facilitate election preparations.
The party believes that seat sharing can be accomplished smoothly in states such as Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and Rajasthan, where Congress holds power, as well as in states like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Bihar, where non-BJP and Congress allies are in authority.
While states like West Bengal, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab present more complex scenarios, the TMC is confident that seat allocation decisions can still be reached.
While the Congress has not issued an official response, party sources indicate that they are considering the Trinamool's proposal.
