Triple earthquakes rock Andaman in a single day

The Andaman Sea experienced a cluster of seismic activity on Monday, with three earthquakes recorded in a single day by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The latest tremor, a magnitude 4.7 earthquake, struck the region at approximately 12:06 PM IST. This followed two earlier quakes, a magnitude 4.6 at 11:22 AM and another magnitude 4.7 at 10:09 AM.

All three earthquakes on Monday occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, according to data released by the NCS on their social media platform, X. The recurring seismic events highlight the active nature of the Andaman Sea region, which, along with the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, falls under Seismic Zone V—India's highest risk zone for earthquakes.

This recent seismic activity follows a magnitude 4.2 earthquake that struck the Andaman Sea just five days prior, on June 25, at a depth of 20 kilometers. The Ministry of Earth Sciences has previously noted that the Alpine-Himalayan seismic belt, extending into the Andaman-Nicobar island region, is one of the world's most seismically active zones.
