A road accident occurred on Kolkata’s high-security Red Road in the early hours of Monday when a goods-laden truck lost control and crashed into an electric pole and the boundary wall. The incident took place near the statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, which reportedly escaped any damage by a very narrow margin. According to witnesses, the truck veered off its path, snapped a roadside lamp post, and slammed into the railing before coming to a halt just inches away from the historic monument.
Local eyewitnesses claimed that the mishap was triggered by the truck driver’s attempt to avoid a head-on collision with a Gangasagar-bound bus that had suddenly appeared in its path. In an effort to save the bus and its passengers, the truck driver swerved sharply, leading to the loss of control. The impact was so severe that the front cabin of the truck was completely mangled, trapping the driver inside the wreckage.
Officers from the Maidan Police Station arrived at the spot immediately after being alerted. In a swift rescue operation, the police had to cut through the truck's metal door to extract the trapped driver. He was found with serious injuries and was rushed to the Trauma Care Centre at SSKM Hospital. His condition is currently reported to be stable but remains under close observation by medical professionals.
