A goods-laden truck fell from a flyover onto railway tracks in the Nimpura area of Kharagpur, West Midnapore, around midnight on Monday. The incident occurred on National Highway 6 when the vehicle broke through the flyover’s railing and landed in the railway reception yard, snapping overhead wires. The truck was loaded with iron rods and was headed towards Jhargram from Nadia.
The truck driver died on the spot. The helper, who was critically injured, was rescued from the wreckage and taken to Kharagpur Sub-Divisional Hospital. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later transferred to Midnapore Medical College and Hospital. His condition remains critical, according to hospital sources.
Railway officials arrived at the site shortly after the crash. The impact damaged railway infrastructure, including overhead electrical equipment. Train movement in the yard was affected for some time. Authorities cordoned off the area and began initial restoration and inspection work to assess the extent of the damage.
Administrative sources confirmed that the accident occurred directly above the railway reception yard. The railway department has launched an investigation to determine the sequence of events and assess any operational disruptions. No other injuries or train accidents were reported in connection with the incident.
