Trump announces 2-week ceasefire amid West Asia conflict after Pakistan's mediation

US President Donald Trump has announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran, temporarily suspending planned military strikes as part of an effort to open the door for negotiations. The truce was declared shortly before a deadline set by Washington for Tehran to comply with US demands, including reopening the crucial Strait of Hormuz for global shipping.

The decision followed diplomatic intervention from Pakistan, with discussions reportedly involving Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and army chief Asim Munir. Washington agreed to suspend bombing operations for two weeks while Iran confirmed it would guarantee safe maritime passage through the Strait of Hormuz during the same period.

According to statements from the White House, the ceasefire will allow negotiations to continue based on a 10-point proposal put forward by Tehran. The plan includes non-aggression commitments, sanctions relief and broader regional de-escalation measures. Talks between US and Iranian representatives are expected to begin soon, with Islamabad likely hosting the discussions.

Iran’s leadership, however, warned that the truce does not mark the end of the conflict. Officials said their forces remain on alert and would respond strongly to any renewed attacks. The war, which began with US and Israeli strikes earlier this year and triggered retaliatory attacks across the region, has already disrupted global oil markets and heightened tensions across the Middle East.
