Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative activist and co-founder of the youth organization "Turning Point USA," has been shot and killed at an event at Utah Valley University. The assassination occurred while he was on a college tour, sparking a swift and widespread response from political leaders, including President Donald Trump.
The shooting took place as Kirk was engaged in a discussion with a questioner at his "Prove Me Wrong" outdoor tent, where he invited students to debate his political and cultural viewpoints. According to eyewitnesses, moments before the shot, Kirk was ironically discussing gun control.
An eyewitness, Raydon DeChene, recounted the terrifying moments to CBS News, stating that a single shot rang out, and she saw Kirk suddenly grab his neck as blood began "pouring out everywhere." DeChene described the scene of chaos as people dropped to the ground and then fled. The shot, she said, sounded like it came from up a nearby hill. The Utah Valley University police later stated that the shot was fired from a building about 200 yards away.
In a video address, President Trump confirmed the death of what he called "the Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk." Trump condemned the act as a form of political violence and vowed to find all those responsible. "My administration will find each and every one of those who contributed to this atrocity and to other political violence, including the organizations that fund it and support it," Trump said.
Initial confusion surrounded the status of a suspect. While a person was taken into custody on suspicion of involvement, FBI Director Kash Patel later announced that this individual had been released after interrogation. This has led to the suspect still being at large, with the FBI investigation continuing to find the real perpetrator.
