In a tragic incident near Gopgarh Heritage and Eco-Park close to Medinipur town, a husband and wife were found hanging from a tree on Wednesday night. Local residents spotted the bodies and alerted police from Medinipur Kotwali Police Station, who reached the spot, brought the bodies down and sent them to Midnapore Medical College and Hospital. Doctors declared both dead.
The deceased were identified as Pintu Das (38) and his wife Madhumita Das (32), residents of the Banpada area of Medinipur. The couple is survived by their two minor children — a son and a daughter. Based on preliminary findings, police suspect suicide, though a detailed investigation is underway.
Family members expressed shock over the incident. Pintu’s brother, Krishna Das, said there had been no known disputes between the couple and that the family was unable to comprehend what led them to take such an extreme step. Local residents alleged that Pintu had been under severe financial stress for some time due to mounting debts and persistent pressure from creditors. They claimed that repeated humiliation and mental distress may have pushed the couple towards the drastic act.
Ward No. 13 Trinamool Congress councillor Mozammel Hossain also said Pintu was burdened with substantial debt that he was unable to repay. Police in Paschim Medinipur district have initiated a detailed probe, examining all possible angles to ascertain the exact circumstances behind the suspected suicide.
