No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
A late-night robbery attempt was thwarted by quick-thinking locals in the Sonarpur area of South 24 Parganas, leading to the arrest of two minors. The incident, which created a sensation in the area, involved a vicious attack on an app bike rider who was returning home from work. The victim, identified as Mohammad Mehboob, was severely injured with a sharp weapon, but his screams for help ultimately led to the capture of his assailants.
The terrifying incident unfolded at around 1:30 a.m. as Mehboob was traveling along Mallikpur Road. According to his account, as he approached the Sarkar intersection—an area on the border of Sonarpur and Baruipur police stations—two individuals suddenly stepped out of the darkness and blocked his path. As the bike rider slowed down, the two men lunged at him, grabbing the handlebars of his bike.
The suspects, who police later identified as minors, attempted to snatch Mehboob's mobile phone. When he bravely resisted, the two robbers allegedly began assaulting him with a chopper, striking him repeatedly on various parts of his body. Despite his intense pain, Mehboob continued to fight back and scream for help, drawing the attention of people nearby.
As the commotion grew, the two assailants managed to snatch the phone and attempted to flee. However, the bike rider's desperate cries for help were heard by some local residents who were on the road. The locals rushed to the scene and, seeing the two men running, caught them red-handed. One of the residents recounted, "We saw a boy running with another one chasing him. The one running had a chopper mark on his back. We caught them and they admitted they were robbers."
Following the dramatic citizen's arrest, the Sonarpur police were immediately informed. Officers arrived at the scene and promptly took the seriously injured Mohammad Mehboob to Subhashgram Rural Hospital for treatment. The residents also handed over the two captured robbers to the police, who took them into custody for questioning.
The police interrogation revealed a shocking detail: both of the arrested assailants are minors and reside in the same Mallikpur area as the victim. The Sonarpur police also recovered the sharp weapon used in the robbery from a nearby bush. The authorities are particularly concerned as it was discovered that one of the minors had a previous history of a similar assault involving a chopper. The two minors are set to be produced before a juvenile court today.
