Construction work on the Chingrighata Metro project has advanced significantly after remaining stalled for nearly one-and-a-half years earlier. In two separate phases completed within 120 hours, metro authorities installed 62 metres of viaduct between pillars 317 and 319 near the Chingrighata crossing along the EM Bypass.
The first phase of work was carried out between 8 pm on May 15 and 8 am on May 18 within a 60-hour construction window. During this period, a 28-metre-long viaduct consisting of 10 concrete segments was installed between pillars 317 and 318. Traffic movement on the Ultadanga-bound lane of the EM Bypass remained partially restricted and regulated during the operation.
The second phase began from 8 pm on May 22 and continued till 8 am on May 25. In this phase, authorities completed installation of another 34-metre-long viaduct between pillars 318 and 319 within another 60-hour period. Traffic movement on the eastern flank of the EM Bypass was suspended during the work. Metro authorities stated that girder installation at the Chingrighata crossing has now been completed.
According to officials, an alternative 60-metre road will now be constructed beside the canal along the Salt Lake Bypass to divert vehicles while concrete deck installation continues east of the crossing. Kolkata Police and Rail Vikas Nigam Limited officials have already inspected the proposed site. Authorities stated that the launcher machine will next move up to pillar number 329 to connect the line with Gaur Kishore Ghosh Metro Station near Nicco Park, with metro services expected to begin by the end of the year if work progresses as scheduled.
