Two youth caught drinking on bikes in Newtown at dawn, viral photo sparks outrage

A disturbing photo of youths sitting on bikes and drinking alcohol in broad daylight at Newtown’s Shirish Bagan area has gone viral, sparking outrage among residents. The incident, captured around 7 am, has raised serious questions about law enforcement and public safety in the area.

Every morning, while residents engage in their daily walks and exercise, a group of youths reportedly gather at the same spot, openly drinking. The photo, widely circulated on social media, shows young men seated on bikes with liquor bottles in hand, seemingly unconcerned about any police action.

Locals, including women and senior citizens who frequent the area for morning walks, have repeatedly witnessed such scenes. Some early risers tried to protest against the public drinking, but their objections were brushed aside, with the youths claiming they were "locals" and had the right to sit there.

The location falls under the jurisdiction of the KLC Police Station, while just across the road is the area patrolled by Technocity Police Station, both under Kolkata Police. Despite this, there seems to be a glaring lack of active patrolling in the early morning hours, allowing such unlawful activities to continue unchecked.

Following the viral spread of the photo, residents are demanding stricter patrolling and visible action against such behavior. Many have expressed concerns that public drinking not only tarnishes the image of Newtown but also creates a threatening environment for families and morning walkers.

Kolkata Police officials have yet to make a formal statement on the viral incident, but sources indicate that both KLC and Technocity Police Stations have been alerted and may soon take corrective measures to restore order in the area.
