Uber faces a substantial setback as it settles a lawsuit filed on behalf of over 8,000 drivers and operating staff in Australia. The ride-hailing giant has agreed to compensate them with a hefty sum amounting to USD 178 million or Rs 1,475 crore. The lawsuit was filed in an Australian court, revealing the challenges Uber encountered as it sought to expand its presence in the country, leading to significant financial burdens on drivers who lost their incomes.
Despite the massive payout, details regarding the scale and size of the settlement remain undisclosed pending court approval, which is yet to be determined in the best interest of the drivers. In a market dominated by major players like Uber, Didi, Ola, and A2B, accounting for approximately 70% of the Australian taxi-cab market share, this settlement underscores the challenges faced by gig economy workers and the ongoing legal battles between ride-hailing companies and their drivers.
