Uttarakhand took a significant step towards implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) as the bill proposing uniform marriage, divorce, land, property, and inheritance laws for all citizens, irrespective of their religion, was tabled in the state assembly on Tuesday. If passed, Uttarakhand will become the first state in the country post-Independence to adopt such a code, marking a historic move towards legal uniformity.
The bill, presented by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, sparked spirited debates in the assembly, with MLAs expressing divergent views on the matter. The session, specially convened for the passage of the UCC bill, witnessed enthusiastic slogans of "Vande Mataram" and "Jai Shri Ram" raised by legislators after Dhami's presentation. The assembly proceedings adjourned until 2 pm, marking the commencement of deliberations on this landmark legislation.
