The UK has issued a stark warning about the deteriorating security situation in the Red Sea after an escalation of attacks by Houthi rebels. Responding to Israel's assault on the Gaza Strip, the Houthi rebels have intensified their offensive, prompting major entities like oil giant BP and freight companies, including Maersk, to reroute their vessels away from the affected area.
In response to the escalating threat, the UK has agreed to deploy the Royal Navy Destroyer HMS Diamond to join a U.S.-led operation aimed at safeguarding commerce in the region.
The United States has announced the formation of a task force comprising ships to protect shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden—critical trading routes that have witnessed a surge in attacks by Houthi rebels based in Yemen.
The UK's Ministry of Defence (MoD) revealed that, in addition to HMS Diamond, the task force currently includes three U.S. destroyers, with a French warship operating in the region. These vessels are strategically positioned in the Southern Red Sea, focusing on upholding freedom of navigation, safeguarding international trade, and protecting human life by countering illicit non-state actors in international waters.
