On Tuesday morning, the body of an unidentified person was recovered from the Teesta River near Changmari in Jalpaiguri district’s Kranti block. Local residents spotted the body on the riverbank and informed the police, who retrieved it and sent it for postmortem. The incident took place within the jurisdiction of the Kranti police outpost, and the identity of the deceased remains unknown.
This recovery comes amid an ongoing search for nine tourists who went missing after their car reportedly sank in the Teesta River several days ago. None of the missing tourists’ bodies have been found so far. Separately, continuous heavy rainfall in Sikkim has caused landslides in the Lachen area, resulting in six personnel being reported missing.
Jalpaiguri district Superintendent of Police confirmed the recovery of the unidentified body from the river and said investigations are underway to establish the identity of the deceased. Search and rescue operations continue in both the river and landslide-affected areas. No further details have been released at this time.
