Since Sunday morning, rain showers have swept across various regions of West Bengal, offering respite from the scorching heat. According to a statement released by the Meteorological Department's regional headquarters in Alipore, Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 28.5 degrees Celsius, three degrees above the normal range. Simultaneously, the maximum temperature soared to 37.4 degrees Celsius. In districts including Howrah, Hooghly, North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Medinipur, Purulia, Bankura, and Murshidabad, temperatures ranged between 28 to 38 degrees Celsius, causing distress among residents due to the oppressive humidity.
The onset of rain, predominantly in South Bengal, has provided relief from the sweltering conditions, with forecasts indicating continued rainfall throughout the day. The Meteorological Department anticipates that these showers may alleviate the prevailing heatwave. Meanwhile, in North Bengal districts such as Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, and Kalimpong, steady rainfall persists, contributing to a cooler climate in those areas.
