On January 22, the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet held a special meeting in Prayagraj, coinciding with the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela. The session took place at the Triveni Sankul in Arail, located near the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers. The choice of venue was aimed at reducing disruptions for pilgrims during the Mela while ensuring smooth operations for the meeting. The cabinet meeting, which began at 12 noon, was attended by all 54 ministers from the state.
After concluding the cabinet session, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, along with other ministers, took part in a ceremonial boat ride from the Arail VIP Ghat to the Sangam. Upon reaching the confluence, the ministers performed traditional rituals before immersing themselves in the holy waters, a practice meant to signify spiritual renewal and purification. The holy dip is a significant ritual for many, especially during the Kumbh Mela, which is considered one of the most auspicious events in Hinduism.
This marks the second time Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and his cabinet have participated in the holy dip at the Sangam. The first instance occurred during the 2019 Kumbh Mela, further emphasizing the administration's connection with cultural and religious practices in the state. Such ceremonies also serve as symbolic gestures to demonstrate the government's alignment with religious traditions.
In addition to the ceremonial activities, the cabinet meeting discussed important state matters, including environmental initiatives. One major proposal under consideration is the declaration of the Maha Kumbh area as a permanent plastic-free zone. This proposal aligns with the state's ongoing efforts to improve cleanliness and sustainability, particularly in areas surrounding the Ganga River, under the 'Nirmal Ganga' mission.
