A 27-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district has been arrested and jailed for allegedly spreading misinformation and sharing pro-Pakistan content on social media. The accused, Jamaat Ali, a resident of Mukrabpur village, posted a video on Facebook claiming that a Rafale fighter jet belonging to the Indian Air Force was shot down by Pakistani forces, and that the pilot had been captured.
The video, now removed, was flagged by local authorities, prompting an investigation. According to police officials, further scrutiny of Ali’s Facebook account revealed that he had also liked and shared multiple videos that were sympathetic to Pakistan amid ongoing India-Pakistan tensions.
The complaint was filed by Sub-Inspector Dheerendra Kumar at the Hazrat Nagar Garhi police station. Following a preliminary inquiry, Ali was booked under Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to actions endangering the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India.
Police stated that such content, especially during heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, not only spreads misinformation but also poses a threat to national security. Authorities are now monitoring social media more closely for similar instances of provocative or misleading content.
Ali was sent to judicial custody on Sunday, and further legal proceedings are underway.
