Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
A 21-year-old woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Raebareli district was rescued just in time after she posted a distressing message on Instagram, triggering an alert to the police. The woman, a final-year undergraduate student from Devanandpur Nai Basti, had shared a photo of capsules along with a message saying, “Goodbye, sorry mamma papa” on June 16.
Meta’s system flagged the post and immediately alerted the UP Police Social Media Centre in Lucknow. The alert was escalated to the Director General of Police, who instructed officers to trace the woman’s location through her registered phone number. A police team reached her home within eight minutes and found her safe, though emotionally disturbed.
Preliminary investigation revealed that she was under pressure from her family to get married, while she wished to continue her education. After police intervention and on-the-spot counselling, the family agreed to address the matter peacefully. Medical attention was also provided to the woman.
In a similar case in Deoria district, a 20-year-old man was rescued by police within 12 minutes of a suicidal post on Instagram. He later revealed he was stressed due to his family's unpaid bank loan. According to police data, from January 1, 2023 to June 16, 2025, 1,024 lives have been saved in UP through the joint alert system between Meta and state police.
