US, Canada concern after shoot-at-sight order in Bangladesh

The United States and Canada have urged their citizens to avoid traveling to Bangladesh amid escalating tensions and widespread protests. More than 100 deaths were reported in Bangladesh as police cracked down on unrelenting student-led protests against government job quota despite a ban on public gatherings

Authorities in Bangladesh have extended a nationwide curfew and granted police "shoot-on-sight" orders as the country's top court prepares to rule on the contentious job quota that has sparked a nationwide stir by university students.

The Supreme Court is set to issue a verdict on Sunday on whether to abolish the civil service job quota, protests against which triggered violence and clashes that led to the deaths of at least 133 people.

A strict curfew, imposed across Bangladesh on Friday to quell growing unrest, was extended till 3 pm on Sunday, after the Supreme Court hearing. The curfew was briefly lifted on Saturday afternoon to allow people to run essential errands.
