In a major security operation, the National Investigation Agency arrested an American citizen, Matthew VanDyke, at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport on March 12, triggering alarm among intelligence and security agencies. The 46-year-old was intercepted while attempting to board a flight to Dubai and was taken into custody based on prior intelligence inputs.
VanDyke faces serious allegations including espionage, links with terrorist organisations, and providing military training to armed groups. Investigators claim he is the founder of an organisation called Sons of Liberty International and has previously operated in conflict zones such as Libya, Syria, and Ukraine, where he reportedly trained fighters and engaged in guerrilla activities.
According to the probe, he had recently entered Myanmar illegally via Mizoram and was allegedly involved in training rebel groups in advanced drone technology and weapons handling. Agencies believe his activities were part of a broader network aimed at supporting insurgent groups operating in Northeast India and neighbouring regions.
The investigation has also pointed to a wider international conspiracy involving the movement of drone consignments from Europe to Myanmar through India. Officials suspect the network was planning drone-based attacks and attempting to destabilise sensitive regions, including Manipur and border areas.
Further developments include the detention of six Ukrainian nationals from airports in Delhi and Lucknow, believed to be linked to the case. The accused has been produced before the Patiala House Court and is currently under remand, as agencies continue to examine his digital records and funding channels to uncover the full extent of the network.
