Public outcry continues in RG Kar case as more culprits remain free; Sanjay Roy not the only one
The abandoned outpatient department of Uttarpara State General Hospital in Hooghly has become a site of growing illegal activity, attracting anti-social elements. The building, which has been in a state of disrepair for years, is now a regular spot for individuals engaging in alcohol consumption and drug use, including marijuana. Overgrown weeds and the building’s deteriorating condition have created an environment where these activities are hidden from the public and local authorities.
Sources confirm that the building has been stripped of its doors and windows, with further damage to its infrastructure. This neglect has made it an ideal location for anti-social groups to gather. Locals report that the building is being used not only for drinking and drug use but also for other illicit activities, which occur throughout the day and night. The building’s remote location, combined with its state of disrepair, has made it difficult for law enforcement or the hospital to monitor the area effectively.
The hospital, located near a police station, has seen little intervention despite the ongoing criminal activities. Residents have expressed concerns about the safety of the area, especially since many women pass through the vicinity at night to shop or return home. Some have raised alarms about the potential for violence, as the area has become a hideout for anti-social elements who are reportedly armed with knives and other weapons.
In response to the situation, Uttarpara State General Hospital authorities have outlined measures to secure the area. The hospital's superintendent, Mohsin Mondal, confirmed that a gate will be installed at the entrance of the old outpatient department to prevent unauthorized access. Additionally, the authorities have decided to submit a formal complaint to the police to address the increasing safety concerns. The Public Works Department will also be contacted to ensure that the area is cleaned and maintained. Plans to convert the building into a nursing school have not yet been approved by the relevant authorities.
